LaidBack Softball Summer 2008

11.17.2008 - Mark Choi

The 2008 softball league was mired in potential jeopardy as our beloved commissioner Sid Dorfman tragically passed away shortly before the season began. Through a determined resolve to carry on with a season dedicated to the memory of Sid, the summer of 2008 softball began with heavy hearts and a widespread respect for a man who had guided the league for the past eighteen years.

Making the leap to a more competitive field, and now without the service of several key members from years past, regular losses in the early going became a new reality, albeit one that was met with true laid back spirit and sportsmanship. As the summer wore on, however, results began to see an upswing, and opposing teams would often marvel at how our team would embrace winning and losing alike with equal gusto and positivity. In light of this spirit, postgame chants of “B-B-Q!!” would often give way to evenings of unrivaled grill mastery and busted bellies. It was truly a summer to remember, and one that our collective taste buds would not soon forget!

In fitting fashion, our very own Captain, Shawn Ford was honoured with the first ever Sid Dorfman Spirit Award as voted on by the rest of the league. Truly, Laidback demonstrated that even when faced with adversity of any and all kinds, the message of fun and spirit trumped any on-field result. Congratulations to one of our own for receiving such an honour, for there was no one more deserving!
